Irish Grant of Arms: Alfred Thomas Neale Evans 1940

eBay vendor alacol_30 has recently completed the bidding for the Grant of Arms to Captain Alfred Thomas Neale Evans (1893-1961), Chief Constable of Pembrokeshire (1935-1958). He was the son of John Evans and Sarah Jane Sharpe, descended from a family formerly resident in Leinster.  The final price is listed as £60.

Arms: Quarterly 1st Azure three goats rampant proper on a chief Azure three trefoils slipped Gules 2nd & 3rd Argent three eagles displayed Sable on a chief Azure three chessrooks Or 4th Or a dragon rampant Gules holding a staff Sable.

Crest: A demi dragon rampant Gules as in the Arms.

Dated:  28th May 1940 – Volume 0 folio 177

Deputy Ulster King of Arms: Thomas Ulick Sadleir

“In Witness whereof I subscribe these Present with my Name and Title and affix hereunto the Seal of my Office this Twenty-eighth day of May in the Fourth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Sixth of Great Britain, Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith and so forth, and in the year of Our Lord One Thousand nine hundred and forty.”

Sadleir was appointed Deputy Ulster King of Arms in 1921.  With the death of Neville Rodwell Wilkinson, Ulster King of Arms, in December 1940, Sadleir performed most of the duties until 1943 when the Republic of Ireland establish the Genealogical Office.
