I have been asked if I could identify the above Crest on a set of medical instruments. The set was for surgery and bloodletting and was made by James Bernardeau of London circa 1740.
My attempt at a blazon:
Crest: A hand couped at the wrist erect holding a broken sword.
Looking through Fairbairn’s and the General Armory I found that it is close to some Richardson Crests. However, those listed had longer Arms, with or without armour. e.g. Richardson of Field House, Whitby, Yorks: A dexter arm erect couped at the elbow holding in the hand a broken sword proper.
Any suggestions?
