Four Grants of Arms: Horton-Smith

Auctioneers Dix Noonan Webb are offering for sale 4 Grants of Arms connected with the Horton-Smith family.  The auction is a “catalogue” auction on the 25th & 26th September.  Each Grant has an auctioneer’s estimate of £160-£200.

 

1. 1900 Grant of Arms to Richard Horton Smith

1900 Horton Smith -Richard

Arms: Argent two chevronnels invected between two demi gryphons couped respecting each other in chief and as many battle axes in saltire in base all Sable.
Crest: In front of a mound Vert thereon a greyhound couchant proper two battle axes in saltire Or
Motto: Prèt À Tressaillir

2. 1905 Royal Licence to Richard Horton Smith to take the name Horton in addition to and before Smith viz Richard Horton Horton-Smith.

Arms: 1st & 4th Argent two chevronnels invected between two demi gryphons couped respecting each other in chief and as many battle axes in saltire in base all Sable (for Smith) 2nd & 3rd Gules a stag’s head cabossed Or on a chief of the last a rose of the first between two thistles slipped and leaved proper (for Horton).
Crest 1: In front of a mound Vert thereon a greyhound couchant proper two battle axes in saltire Or (for Smith).
Crest 2: In front of two claymores saltirewise proper a spear erect Argent the whole encircled by an antique crown Or (for Horton).
Motto 1: Prèt À Tressaillir
Motto 2: Haut On Aspire

3. Royal Licence to Sir Percival Horton Horton-Smith (son of Richard) to take the name Hartley in addition to his surname Horton-Smith viz Sir Percival Horton Horton-Smith-Hartley.

Arms: 1st & 4thArgent on a cross Gules quarter pierced of the field four pierced cinquefoils Or in the fess point a martlet holding in the beak a cross crosslet fitchée Sable (for Hartley)  2nd Argent two chevronnels invected between two demi gryphons couped respecting each other in chief and as many battle axes in saltire in base all Sable (for Smith)  3rd Gules a stag’s head cabossed Or on a chief of the last a rose of the first between two thistles slipped and leaved proper (for Horton).

Grant of Arms: Edward Staines Daniell 1904

e-Bay vendor riverside_retro is offering for sale the 1904 Grant of Arms to Edward Staines Daniell (1828-1906), Lieutenant Colonel Retired List Royal Dublin Fusiliers and to descendants of his father Joseph Staines Daniell (1794-1889).  The “Buy-It-Now” price is £999.00.

Auctioneers Lodge & Thomas are offering for sale the 1897 Grant of Arms to Franklen George Evans.  Rather frustratingly, they are not providing any pictures of the Grant itself, just the box and the rolled up document.

Grant of Arms: Herbert Eccles 1905

eBay vendor, scooterboysx175, is offering for sale the 1905 Grant of Arms to Herbert Eccles (b.1858 d.1928) of Penrhiewtyn House Llantwit Lower, County Glamorgan.  The asking price is £495.00.

Arms: Argent a chevron Gules between the eagles displayed Azure on a chief of the last two bees volant Or.
Crest: A bee volant between two thistles in saltire slipped and leaved all proper.

Herbert’s two sons were Alexander Herbert Lindsey Eccles (14 May 1908 – 29 Aug 1991) and Roy Hector Eccles (2 Dec 1900 – 17 Jan 1938) and are listed amongst The Golden Age of Grand Prix Drivers 1934-40.
