Re-Grant of Arms: Rev John Burleigh James 1890

On sale at eBay until 27th November is the 1890 Grant of Arms to the Rev’d John Burleigh James of Vanbrugh Fields, Blackheath (vendor makov25).  The Rev’d James was originally granted Arms on 10th July 1882, Burke’s General Armory gives the blazon as;

Arms: Per pale Gules and Or on a fess indented between three unicorns’ heads erased as many escallops all counterchanged.

Crest: An unicorn’s head Or encircled by a chaplet of roses proper.

The 1890 Letters Patent “requested the favour of His Grace’s Warrant for our making and granting such alterations accordingly to be borne and used by him and his descendants and by the other descendants of his father..“.

Arms: Gules on a fess nebuly between three unicorns’ heads erased Argent as many escallops proper in the centre chief point a Passion cross of the second.
Crest: A unicorn’s head erased Argent charged on the neck with an escallop Gules and supporting in the mouth a Passion cross also Gules.
