Harry Holmes-Tarn – Grant of Arms 1901

The Scottish Grant of Arms to Harry Holmes-Tarn were recently on sale on eBay.  The Grant is dated 9th September 1901 and signed by Sir James Balfour Paul.

Arms: Parted per saltire Or and Gules two terns naiant in tarns or lochs undy proper one in chief and one in base.
Mantling: Gules and Or.
Crest:  On a wreath of his liveries on a garb fessewise a raven all proper.
Motto:  “Viret in asternum.” (It Flourishes Forever)

Holme-Tarn-Arms

The Arms of Harry Holmes-Tarn were also included within Arthur Charles Fox-Davies 1929 edition of Armorial Families.

  1. Harry Holmes-Tarn (b.1871 d.1932) m.1895 Nora Adelgunde Martini (b.1873 d.1972)
    1. Donald Cunninghame Holmes-Tarn (b.1896 d.1905)
    2. Brigadier Kenneth Archibald Holmes-Tarn, late Royal Artillery (b.1898 d.1971) m1. Dorothy Mary Green (b.1893 d.1958) m2.1960 Elizabeth Grace Hankey (b.1914 d.1976)
    3. Captain Alastair Roderick Holmes-Tarn (b.1911 d.1967) m.1948 Nancy Emlyn Gore.

    Neither surviving son seems to have had any issue to continue the use of the Arms.
